Do you ever have a moment when you think, “I can’t do this?”  In recent, unsettling days, I occasionally watch too much news or look at Facebook or LinkedIn and think, “How in the world am I going to make any kind of difference at all?  What’s the point?”

And then…when I feel useless and ineffective…a client shares the story of someone’s life who has been changed or impacted by their growing mission. And I stop and realize that each person counts for SO much. Each day counts for SO much. I can’t save the whole world. I can’t solve all the problems. I’m not going to be everything to everybody.

But for the onethe one personthe one daythe one opportunityI CAN change things. I can step in with my whole heart, my good brain, my incredible persistence (fill in YOUR great traits here) and I can help.

And isn’t that what Mr. Rogers said we should do when overwhelmed with scary situations or hard times…look for the helpers? Well, I am one of those. And if you’re reading this, YOU are probably one of those, too. The helpers.

We help by standing in the gap. By speaking for those who don’t have a voice…or can’t find theirs. By insisting that power structures and influential people and big scary systems listen to us! By knowing that in doing good for one – even when that seems small – we are making a BIG difference. By being a helper.

So straighten that back – step into your truth and your power – and be a helper for someone today. We need you. We need each other. Now more than ever.
